Earplugs for bath time

If you bath your dog at home, gently put a small wad of cotton wool in the top of your dog's ear canal before he gets wet. Water down the ear can be unpleasant for dogs, making them shake their head. Remember to rinse all soap from the coat and also to remove the cotton wool when the bath is over. When all soap is removed, the coat will squeak as your hand is run over it.

No more tears

When washing your dog's face (sometimes necessary for breeds like spaniels), every attempt should be made to keep the shampoo away from the eyes. However, a good idea is to use a 'tear free' shampoo. Such shampoos are specially formulated to be 'tearless', meaning that it does not sting the eyes. Some dogs dirty their faces when eating and a good wash from time to time makes for a sweeter-smelling companion.

New use for carpet squares

Owners of small to medium-sized dogs sometimes need to put their dog on a non-slip table for nail trimming, grooming, tooth brushing and giving medication. A carpet square is cheaply available and makes an ideal non-slip surface for any table. A second alternative would be a rubber car mat. The carpet square or car mat can also be used to provide a non-slip surface for rabbits or cats should they need to be treated or groomed on a table.

Easier handling for grooming and giving medication
Many owners struggle to keep their dog still for grooming, ear cleaning, nail clipping and to give medication. Apart from using a table with a non-slip surface (and bribing with treats), a simple tip is to put a collar and lead on your dog whilst such procedures are being carried out. The extra control of a collar and lead helps you stay in control. The collar and lead helps prevent your dog from making a quick get-a-way!

Help your rabbit to eat a balanced diet

Rabbit mixes are usually sold as complete foods and provide an ideal nutritional balance. However, some rabbits eat the best bits and may leave some ingredients (often the rabbit pellets). The temptation for a pet owner is to throw away the remaining food and to re-fill their rabbit's bowl. The next day, again, only the favourite ingredients will be eaten. This is not good for the rabbit as it will not be eating a balanced diet.

If your rabbit chooses the best bits and leaves the rest, feed less each day until he eats all the food. You must be sure to supply good-quality hay at all times. Choosy rabbits are usually overfed.

How to stop your cat jumping on to kitchen surfaces

Cats are agile and can get everywhere they want to in your home. The kitchen surfaces are not the most hygienic places for your cat to roam and many cat owners try hard to train their cat out of the habit. This tip has a 100% success rate. Use double-sided tape to fix silver foil to the area you don't want your cat to go on to. As your cat jumps up, he will land on the foil which is not only noisy, but also very slippery - cats hate it and will remember not to go there again!
