San Juan (Puerto Rico) - is steeped in history

Originally settled by the Spanish, the island was ceded to the United States later in 1898 by signing the Treaty of Paris in 1898. However, Old San Juan, also known as the 'old city', retains its Hispanic influence and is the main cultural tourist attraction in Puerto Rico.

The main central part of the 'old city' is characterised by narrow streets made of blue cobblestone and picturesque colonial buildings, some of which date back to the 16th and 17th century. Sections of the 'old city' are surrounded by massive walls and several historical buildings, among the most notable are the city's former defensive forts, Fort San Felipe Del Morro and Fort San Cristóbal, and La Fortaleza, the oldest executive mansion in continuous use in the Americas.

The Port of San Juan situated close to the 'old city' and is the largest home-based cruise port in the world with over a dozen cruise ships docking most days. It is the second busiest port in cruise volume after Miami.

Aruba – the island together with Bonaire and Curacao, forms a group referred to as the ABC islands of the Leeward Antilles

Located 27 km north of the coast of Venezuela in the Southern Caribbean. Together with Saint Maarten, the ABC islands form the Kingdom of the Netherlands and share a single Dutch nationality.

This climate has helped tourism as visitors to the island can reliably expect warm, sunny weather. Aruba is widely known for its white sandy beaches on the western and southern coasts of the island, relatively sheltered from fierce ocean currents, and this is where most tourist development has taken place. The northern and eastern coasts, lacking this protection, are considerably more battered by the sea and have been left largely untouched by humans.

Cruise ships dock in the capital Oranjestad. A short walk takes you into the heart of this vibrant town with it's colourful buildings and variety of shops bars and restaurants.

Bonaire  - Kralendijk is the capital city and main port of the island of Bonaire in the Caribbean Netherlands

Off the coast of Kralendijk lies the uninhabited island of Klein Bonaire, famous for diving and snorkelling. This island can be reached by water taxi, or, for divers, by practically all of the local dive operators. Most cruise lines also offer excursions to snorkel on the reef.

Washington Slagbaai National Park located at the north side of the island, is an ecological preserve. The highest point of Bonaire, the mountainous Brandaris, 787 feet (240 m) high, located within this preserve, has a complete view of the island.

Bonaire is also famed for its flamingo population and donkey sanctuary.

Curaçao - is the largest and most populous of the three ABC islands

Willemstad is the capital city. The historic centre of the city consists of two quarters: Punda and Otrobanda. They are separated by the St. Anna bay, an inlet that leads into the large natural harbour called the 'Schottegat'. Connecting the two districts is the “Queen Emma Bridge”, built in 1888; its 16 floating pontoons swing open using two powerful ship motors (shown above partially open).

Curacao’s rich history comes alive in the stunning architecture to be seen across the island especially in its capital city. The island is also known for its fine sandy beaches and superb diving and snorkelling sites.
