Discover New Zealands iconic Marlborough Sounds from a private cruise and a luxury lodge
We’ve got a fantastic new experience for you from New Zealand with the chance to explore the Marlborough Sounds from the comfort of a private 22m yacht, and at night stay in a luxury lodge only accessible by boat or helicopter.
Experts at New Zealand In Depth have announced the perfect new experience for those looking to explore the spectacular New Zealand Marlborough Sounds from the water but would also rather settle down for the night in a remote luxury lodge, only reachable by boat or helicopter.
The new itinerary has been designed to bring together the best of both worlds on the water and land, with the days exploring the Sounds on the new 20 metre yacht named MV Tarquin and the nights spent at the 5* Bay of Many Coves luxury lodge. MV Tarquin is a luxury yacht with private crew and three en-suite cabins allowing for a maximum of six overnight guests should you stay on board.
Explore the Coves and Bays of the Sounds
Available year round, the new travel opportunity allows guests to experience the Marlborough Sounds in both style and comfort, giving guests the chance to fully immerse and explore the coves and bays of the Sounds alongside an experienced and attentive crew who will tailor each day to be as active, or relaxing, as guests desire.
New Zealand travel expert and founder of New Zealand In Depth, Paul Carberry, said; “Whether it’s through activities or the history, local legends, marine and wildlife or fauna – the only way to really explore the Marlborough Sounds is from the water, and this new experience delivers in style on a luxury private cruiser, with some of the best guides in the business.”
From the comfort of the MV Tarquin, guests can enjoy a scenic cruise with the chance to encounter local marine life, wildlife & birdlife, stop for bush walks, historic tours & eco encounters, swimming, kayaking & fishing.
With over 1500 kilometres of coastline, that’s 10% of New Zealand’s seashore, there’s plenty to explore!
As evening falls, rather than sleep onboard, this luxury itinerary brings guests back to a spectacular luxury lodge, only accessible by boat or helicopter. The 5* Bay of Many Coves lodge sits on the shoreline of the Marlborough Sounds overlooking a spectacular bay and isolated from the world. The well-appointed hillside apartments also enjoy spectacular fine dining at night upstairs at The Foredeck, and daytime dining downstairs at The Kumatage or waterside on the jetty at The Bight Café.
If time allows to stay longer, then the lodge also has a range of activities available including kayaks, dinghy & wakeboards, hiking on the Queen Charlotte Track, bird watching, wine tasting and a day spa.
“This new combination of luxury private cruising and a spectacular lodge allows guests to experience this stunning region and its wildlife from both the water and land” add New Zealand In Depth’s Paul Carberry. “It takes the best of both experiences and combines them into, in my view, the ultimate luxury Marlborough Sounds itinerary enabling our guests to relax and enjoy the open isolation of the Bay of Many Coves.”
Perfect to add to a longer New Zealand adventure and available year round through New Zealand In Depth (www.newzealand-indepth.co.uk), a full board 3-night 4-day trip costs from £4,900 per person including luxury transfers, 2 full days private charter on MV Tarquin including morning tea, seafood experience & tastings, lunch, drinks & activities such as scenic cruising, optional bush walk, kayaking, paddle boarding, fishing and exploring; 3 nights at Bay of Many Coves including dinner, bed and breakfast, and a private wine tour.

About Paul Carberry – founder of New Zealand In Depth
“I think it was inevitable that I would work in travel and focus on New Zealand in particular. My dad worked in the airline industry for many years for the likes of BOAC, British Airways and then Air New Zealand before he set up his own long-haul travel business.
I had the excitement of growing up imagining travel to distant lands and, after completing a degree in geology and working in the family travel business for a couple of years, I left the UK and spent several months exploring New Zealand returning to set up my own New Zealand travel company in 2003.
Since then I have been fortunate to have been able to travel back to New Zealand many times, feeling that is more and more like home every time I go.”
About Sally Lilley – Travel specialist at New Zealand In Depth
“I met John (my partner) in 1999 and after 20 years in the Financial Services industry jumped at the chance to take 12 months off and travel around the world as a mature backpacker. On returning to the UK in 2001 I worked for a number of organisations in the charity and hospitality sector before deciding New Zealand was where we wanted to live.
John & I emigrated to New Zealand in 2003 and entered the world of hospitality and tourism. Over the next seven years we ran a number of remote Lodges on the South Island including Milford Sound, Lake Moeraki and Arthurs Pass and in 2010 we took over a small group guided tour company based in Christchurch.
We spent the next four years guiding small groups around New Zealand ensuring they had a trip of a lifetime. After 11 years in New Zealand we moved back to the UK for family reasons and now have the pleasure of sending visitors to New Zealand to enjoy all my favourite places – many of which you will not find in the guide books.”
